This post will be as short of the race. I had two major problems with the Sprint:
- Every photographers nightmare is a camera malfunction at a critical time, particularly when you can’t re-shoot. This happened to me during the sprint, I only managed to get one shot of the race (fortunately usable). Hence there’s not many photos in this post.
- I wrote the following a couple of weeks ago about Peniaphobia https://paomaphotography.com.au/2015/11/29/peniaphobia/ . How wrong did I get that!
Peniaphobia drew wide in gate 14, and there was plenty of speculation during the lead up as to whether he’d hunt forward or be ridden more quietly. Moreira quashed that pretty quickly by gunning him out of the gates and getting across relatively easily, it seemed. From there, it seemed all too easy, although Gold-Fun and Not Listenin’tome did close late.
“I thank God that I was on board him, he was meant to win the race, the way he’s done things today. He gave me a beautiful ride, he’s so professional. I had to use him in the back straight to come across so I wanted to hold on to him as long as I could. We made it and everything was fine” said Moreira afterwards.
Favourite Gold-Fun appeared to have his chance. “He broke fine I had a good trip but no one chased the leader they slowed down on the turn but I just didn’t have enough to come and get them” said Soumillon.
So all in all a triumph for trainer Tony Cruz and Moreira and me with egg on my face (not for the first time).
